Hi Colm,

I have always had extremely fine hair. It’s shoulder length and usually cut with layers to give it body. I avoid colour as I’m nervous it will weaken it. The ends always look like rats tails to me. Any styling suggestions, I just want it to look healthy!

Hi Susan,

First, you need a good solid hair cut. If your hair is shoulder length, then take it to a bob (chin length). Leave out any layers as extremely fine hair is normally brittle and within a few washes will have a slightly layered look on the ends anyway. Ask your stylist just to use a classic cutting technique using straight lines as this will keep a lot more structure and shape to the look.

As for colour, I would not be nervous to use a semi-permanent colour. Use one which is Ammonia and Peroxide free. This add condition and shine without lightening your hair.

To strengthen hair from within, I would always recommend plenty of Vitamin B “Hair, Nails and Skin” by Solgar is an excellent choice says Maire Hearne from The Natural Health Shop in Tramore, 120 tablets retails at €20.00. When washing your hair at home I would recommend Volume Expand from L’Oreal Serie Expert which is rich in mineral CA, and has tiny crystals derived from calcium to help create glamorous volume. There is also a root lift spray in the range to help you style your hair without stiffness or stickiness.
